Thinking About Dogs from an Evolutionary Perspective

Using evolution as a tool to better understand the dogs we share our homes with can be useful, but treating our dogs like wolves is not. It is the very fact that dogs have evolved to be different than wolves that allows them to live in our homes. It is much more valuable to look at these differences for insight into how to better live with our canine companions. During this talk I will focus on how dogs evolved to their original niche, the environment most of them still occupy today, the garbage dump.

Dr. Lord (she/her) has been studying the evolution and development of behavior in dogs and wolves for over 20 years. She is currently a Postdoctoral Associate in the Karlsson lab at The University of Massachusetts Medical School and The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
